From the Orchard to the Glass: Will’s Award-Winning Journey

At 17, I was at university diving into sport and leisure studies, mixing in business and psych papers, thinking I had it all mapped out. But life’s never a straight line. By 21, I was dairy farming. Three years later, I was managing apple orchards. I even completed an apprenticeship in horticulture through Primary ITO. Still, something was missing.

The turning point came in late 2023 with the birth of my son. I realised I wanted more time at home, more consistent hours, and a career with long-term potential. Glazing gave me all of that - and let me finally step into the construction industry, something I’d always wanted.

Glazing’s more than cutting and fitting glass. It’s a team game. You rely on each other -every day, every job - because the goal is always the same: do a great job and get home safe. That sense of having each other’s backs, that camaraderie, that’s what makes a good glazier in my eyes.

Now, I spend my weekdays learning something new on-site and my weekends with my girlfriend and toddler, playing footy, or getting away with mates. It’s a good life.

For any apprentice starting out - be curious. Ask questions. Say yes to the tricky jobs. Write down the tips and tricks you learn from your team. If you want to stand out, act like a leader before you’re called one, take pride in your work, and show you’re all in.

To the employers - gratitude goes a long way. I’m trusted and respected at work, and because of that, I want to give 100% every day.

One last thing? Have fun with it. Glazing’s an awesome trade. Be proud of what you build. Show it off. You’ll never regret getting stuck in.
